A Better Commute in Spain

Transportation DesignRenfe Cercanias
The Spanish railway company Renfe has ordered high-capacity trains from Stadler for commuter services in Spain’s metropolitan regions. For this project, Stadler delivered a train composition combining single-deck and double-deck carriages for the first time. These trains feature spacious entrance areas and are fully barrier-free. Thanks to their generous interior space, they provide ample room during peak hours—not only for commuters but also for bicycles and pushchairs. Nose contributed to the project with an intelligent layout and a modern atmosphere. Additionally, an innovative lighting concept was developed as part of a subproject.
Light, air, and transparency – the interior creates a pleasant atmosphere
Upon entering the train, passengers are greeted by a clearly structured and uncluttered appearance. The colour concept is based on Renfe's corporate colours while incorporating elements from the existing fleet, creating a harmonious connection to the brand identity.

Clever design ensures greater seating comfort
For the upholstery, a unique pattern was created, lending the interior a truly distinctive character. The seats offer a blend of understated elegance and excellent functionality. In the development process, a clever solution was found in partnership with the seat manufacturer to incorporate the handle seamlessly into the headrest – a design feature that enhances comfort thanks to a wider headrest.
A key component of the interior design is the lighting concept, which plays a crucial role in shaping the passenger experience. In the development process, Nose created a lighting and ceiling solution that effectively prevents glare, even in the low-ceilinged environment of double-decker trains.
Lighting atmosphere
The side ceilings are brightly and indirectly illuminated, providing even illumination and making the center ceiling appear to float. Spotlights ensure high reading comfort and create a lively lighting atmosphere. This balanced combination of direct and indirect lighting, along with the natural light coming through the generous windows, optimally illuminates the passenger compartment. It makes it appear spacious and airy, creating a pleasant travel atmosphere.

Prototyping with light
The new lighting concept was developed by Nose in several iterations using physical and digital mockups. We used professional lighting design tools and checked the results in 1:1 mockups. The subsequent implementation in the white mockup by Stadler impressed the Renfe team.

Even for a commuter train – no compromises on travel comfort and atmosphere! That was important to us, and with Stadler Valencia, we had a partner who fully supported this approach.»
