Quantum Leap by Design
Tyne and Wear Metro, operated by Nexus, serves a network used by over 36 million passengers every year, connecting the greater Newcastle area with Gateshead, Sunderland, South Shields, Tynemouth, and Whitley Bay north and south of the Tyne and Wear rivers.
By ordering 42 METRO trains from Stadler Rail, Nexus is laying a cornerstone for modernising its rail system. The new rolling stock is seen as a quantum leap for public transport in the region. Stadler, with support from local partners, will put the new trains into service and maintain the fleet for the next 35 years.
Customer experience was a top priority for operator Nexus. The new Metro was designed based on ideas and suggestions from more than 3,000 passengers.
The new trains will offer passengers modern features such as information screens, Wi-Fi, USB charging ports, air conditioning, and underfloor heating in winter. Barrier-free access is also ensured. The new layout, inspired by the London Underground, features linear seating and open spaces for peak times. Four dedicated areas provide space for wheelchairs, bikes, and prams.
In close collaboration with Newcastle-based agency Octo, Nose helped realise this new customer experience. With great attention to detail, we have carried the iconic Tyne and Wear Metro design language into the future. The new trains are set to go into service from 2024.
