Design Quality Meets Feasibility in Dutch Regional Transport
With its design directive, Nederlandse Spoorwegen pursues a bold and distinctive formal language that deliberately sets new accents in commuter transport. Nose has translated this design vision into a contemporary and economically viable vehicle design.
In close collaboration with Stadler’s engineering team in Prague, our transportation design team further developed various interior elements, including the glass partitions. The new construction minimises visible technical components, creating a particularly transparent and refined spatial impression. The lighting concept was also developed jointly: ceiling-integrated circular light modules and a striking lighting feature in the entrance area reflect the core ideas of the design directive. The standard luggage rack was adapted to function as a stand-alone design element – fully aligned with the overarching design principles.
On the exterior, the iconic appearance of Nederlandse Spoorwegen – defined by its distinctive yellow and bold logos – finds a coherent continuation on the new Stadler vehicles. The front section, designed by Nose, echoes the characteristic angle of the company’s logo and integrates seamlessly into the overall visual concept.
The result is a functional, modular train design with a distinctively Dutch look and feel – designed in Zurich, developed in Prague, and ready for production at Stadler’s Polish facility in Siedlce. With this unique design language, Nose demonstrates how design quality, technical feasibility and economic efficiency can be precisely balanced.
The new fleet is scheduled to enter service in 2030, helping to meet growing demand in Dutch regional transport.
